Online Therapy in Michigan: Depression & The Thought Triangle
Online therapy can help treat depression. One of the online therapy treatment methods I use with clients who have a depressed mood is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). One of the core principles of CBT is your thoughts direct your feelings and behaviors. Treatment involves helping clients change their thinking patterns. One of the strategies includes using the cognitive triangle or thought triangle.
Above the thought triangle is an event. An event is something that happens. An event is a fact. Pure and simple. It has no good or bad to it. Examples include getting a raise, asked to work overtime, spending time with your partner, a person said something, a death of a family member or losing a wallet.
At the top of the Thought Triangle are thoughts. Thoughts are your interpretation of what happens. Thoughts could be, “I’m a boss,” “I’m a loser,” “I can never make this happen” or “Why did I get out of bed today? I knew I would amount to nothing.”
In the corner are feelings and behaviors. Feelings are your emotions. Basic emotions include fear, anger, sadness, joy, disgust, and surprise. Behaviors are the way you act.
Online Therapy in Michigan & Depression
What the Thought Triangle shows is your thoughts are in control of your feelings and behaviors. Your thoughts are an interpretation of an event. An event is something that happens. The way you interpret something happening controls the way that you feel and the way you act. One of the most important ideas I talk with clients about is you are in control of the way you think. You are in control of the way you see an event. Whether you are conscious of it or not, you make the choices.
Online Therapy Treats Depression
You can break down every situation using the thought triangle. It’s a helpful tool to help people recognize their thoughts play a significant role in the way they feel and act. The thought triangle can also help people learn their thoughts can help them or hold them back.
