Treatment comes in many different forms. I can name a bunch of acronyms but that doesn’t really help much. I want to talk specifically about one type of treatment. It’s called behavioral activation. Behavioral activation is based on the idea that as people become depressed, they isolate themselves from others, as well as stop doing activities that bring them joy.  The goal of treatment is to get people to re-engage with people that they enjoy spending time with, as well as, to re-engage with activities that bring them joy. Sounds simple right?

It is as simple as that. Start to reach out to your best friend and have a conversation. Reach out to your family and friends to hang out. Spend time with those that energize you. Do activities that bring you joy. Go to a basketball game. Go to the gym. Go for walk. Go to the beach.  Yeah, I know what you are going to say.

You are going to say that I don’t feel like it. That I don’t have the energy to do any of those things. I don’t have the time.  I have two responses. The first response is you have to force yourself to do it.  The second response is baby steps. Baby steps add up.  Send one text message. Walk from our front door to the end of the driveway and back. Just start doing.

You have to force yourself to do activities to help yourself feel better.  Behavioral activation is an outside-in approach to treatment. I mean that once you start to do activities that bring you joy, you will feel better physically and emotionally. When you start to feel better, your mindset will change.  This is different from the traditional inside- out approach many receive in therapy.  The inside out approach is where you change your mindset first, then you feel better physically and emotionally.
