Online Therapy in Michigan: 5 Tips for Finding a Therapist

Michigan Rock by Charlie Wollborg 3/3/23 Upsplash- Online Therapy in Michigan

Finding an online therapist in Michigan isn’t easy. Many people hop on directories like Therapy Den or psychology today and start to click around. Then, they mass email everyone that checks their boxes such as insurance and issues they treat. There is much more to getting successful therapy treatment than those two points but that is what seems to be most important to people. If you want real results from therapy, here are 5 tips that will help you find the perfect therapist for you.

Find the Perfect Therapist in Michigan

  • Know you will have to kiss a few frogs.

The first person you speak with may not be the best therapist for you. That is okay. Please understand that there is a strong relationship between positive treatment outcomes and the reason with your therapist. Continue to look for a therapist that feels right for you. Know that it may take multiple attempts with several therapists before you find the right one for you. Just like how you don’t work perfectly with everyone, therapists do not work perfectly with everyone.

  • Trust your gut instinct when it comes to choosing a therapist.

You’ll know within the first 5 minutes of a conversation if you’ve found the right therapist for you. You will feel comfortable talking with them. You’ll be able to let your guard down. Make sure you listen to your gut instinct. It is telling you something. An important aspect of finding comfort with a therapist is you may not like what this person has to say to you but you must be open to hearing what they say to you. If you are truly capable and open to hearing what this therapist has to say to you, this therapist might be the one for you.

  • Do a consultation call

Many therapists offer a consultation call to assess the client’s needs and determine if it will be a good fit. Make sure you do a consultation call before agreeing to services if possible. Be honest and open about the issue that you are calling to receive support about. Pay close attention to how you are feeling about the interaction with the therapist. You will know quickly if this is the person for you. Also, be sure to ask about how long they expect you to be in treatment, and what therapy looks like with them. Services can vary widely between each therapist. You want to know what you may be getting into before spending your hard-earned money and time.

  • Know the costs

Knowing the cost of service is essential for your treatment. You shouldn’t jump into treatment not knowing how much services cost. The cost for a session varies greatly between therapists. Some therapists accept insurance while others are completely cash pay. Many of the best therapists I know do not accept insurance because of the rules and regulations regarding mental health treatment and insurance. If you know anything about insurance and health care, mental health has not been a priority. Receiving high-quality, effective treatment has a cost.

  • Location

Find a therapist whose location makes receiving therapy convenient. Driving an hour to meet with a therapist can be extremely inconvenient for many people. The more accessible, in terms of location, the better. Many of my clients have found that being able to meet online is optimal for them. They don’t have additional time to spend in traffic. Being able to hop on a computer in their office or at home has been convenient for many of my clients.
