In a previous blog, I talked about behavioral activation for depression.  Behavioral activation is the idea that when people are depressed, they isolate themselves and stop doing activities that bring them joy. The goal of behavioral activation is to get people to start doing activities that bring them joy. In this blog, I’ll be talking about another technique or intervention I use with clients when they are feeling depressed.

When I’m working with people who feel depressed, there comes a point when we start to discuss cognitive distortions.  Cognitive distortions can be defined as a way of thinking that is often inaccurate and negative.  They can be mental filters or biases that feed into our feelings of depression and anxiety.  A cognitive distortion common with people I work with is Magnification and Minimization.

Challenge Magnification with Treatment

Magnification means you are blowing things out of proportion.  Think about when you make a mistake.  People I work with go from zero to one hundred percent when they make a mistake. In the grand scheme of things, the mistake is not as bad as they make it out to be. Sure, it is a mistake. It is a small mistake though.  People also do this with their imperfections. When they do this, they magnify the situation.  In reality, no one cares about the imperfection.

Challenge Your Minimization

Minimization is the opposite end of the spectrum. When you are minimizing an issue, what you are doing is downplaying its importance. A common example of this with the people I work with is when they talk about their strengths or when they receive an award. A majority of my clients believe anyone could have done what they have done and take no credit for the hard work and effort they have put in.

When people use magnification and minimization in the wrong way, this can do psychological damage. If all you do is magnify every single mistake you make, and minimize every single strength you have, you are bound to feel like inferior and a second-class person.  You have no strengths and all you have is faults. If you change the way you use magnification and minimization, you can recognize your strengths and minimize your faults and weaknesses. This can help with your mental health.
